Most of the "good stuff" paint stripper has been taken off the shelf in my area. I wanted a gallon several months ago and my local paint supply told me they can't get it any longer. I tried the product they gave me, some environmentally friendly stuff and it simply didn't work.
Same here. One particular brand would turn the air of the shop purple from a reaction with the open flame natural gas unit heaters hanging from the ceiling. When the air turned purple, we all felt really weird. Had to open doors and windows to air shop out. Of course it was winter, as we were running the heat! I recall that was the chemical that made the best strippers. Yes, here is a USA Today article about it:.
Don't know if it would work for automotive paint, but I've used peel away very successfully for work around the home - much better than the eco friendly citrus based rubbish that literally did nothing.
I always try the safer strippers first those without methylene chloride or NMP , and they usually work well on the old enamels and lacquers. The trick it to let them sit for several hours or overnight. If you want to use a liquid stripper the citristrip does a good job. Lowes has it. I have a quart of citristrip and an old gallon of Jet in the garage.
My first choice would be sandpaper. If pushed into stripper I would grab the orange juice first. I work in commerical aviation. The stuff we've used to strip to bare metal is called Turco. It is very potent stuff - I believe it's concentrated formic acid. You might be able to find some at suppliers like Aviall.
I believe it is ironic that the Aircraft Paint Remover has a warning on the can that says "Do not use to remove paint from airplanes", or something along that line. I've used it frequently over the past 15 years and always wear a respirator mask, gloves and eye protection.
